SHRM-SCP requirements, dates and cost
The requirement for the SHRM-SCP is 3 years strategic HR: 3 years in which strategic work filled at least 1,000 hours, or a move into a strategic role after holding the CP for the same period. You state it on the application, and a random share of applicants is audited. Below are the rules that apply to the senior level, the next testing window, the price and how scoring works, each sourced and dated.

Eligibility: what counts as strategic work
The handbook defines strategic work by what you do: developing HR policies or procedures, overseeing integrated HR operations, directing an entire HR enterprise, leading the alignment of HR strategies with organizational goals. Analyzing performance metrics is on the list too (handbook, pp. 5–6).
- Calendar years, not years in HR. Each qualifying year runs January to December, and strategic work has to fill the hour minimum in it. Extra hours in one year never add up to a second year.
- Any work arrangement. Part-time, salaried and hourly work count, and consultants count the HR work they do for clients, under the same hour standard.
- No degree, no title. Neither is required.
- The CP route. A SHRM-CP holder who has held it for the required years and works in, or is moving into, a strategic role qualifies as well.
If your work so far has been mostly operational, the which-certification page recommends starting at the CP even when you meet the rule.
The audit and switching levels
Audit: a random share of applications is checked in every window. An audited applicant gets an email and a deadline to send documents proving the years claimed; nobody contacts your employers for you, and missing the deadline costs the whole fee (exam options and fees, "Exam Application Audits"). Keep job descriptions or a letter that shows the strategic scope of each year. Without an audit, the Authorization to Test arrives within 10 business days.
Changing your mind: you can switch between the SCP and the CP once per application, if you ask well before the exam; the handbook lists no fee for it. That is the cheap exit if your practice scores suggest the senior exam is a stretch.

Exam dates
There are 2 windows a year, and you can test only inside one, at a Prometric center. Next window: Dec 1, 2026 – Feb 15, 2027. Apply by: Dec 24, 2026. Early-bird pricing for this window applied to applications made Jun 3 – Aug 31, 2026, and SHRM lists the first 2027 window as opening Jan 4, 2027.
The appointment lasts longer than the 3 h 40 min of testing: two timed sections, one optional short break that does not stop the clock, and check-in. Arriving more than 30 minutes late counts as a no-show.
Cost
The senior exam costs exactly what the CP does: $399–$499 as of Oct 2026, member to nonmember at the standard deadline, with the application fee included; the early-bird price was $350 / $450 (closed Aug 31, 2026). Military and student rates are lower; the table below has them along with the charges for moving or resetting an appointment. Whether membership pays for itself, and which charges you can avoid, is worked out once on the CP cost page.
Two charges are worth knowing before you sit, at a level where the latest pass rate was 50%. A fail means a new application in a later window at the full price, so the $150 transfer to the next window, available once per application, is the cheaper move if you are not ready. And if you fail, a results review costs $100.

Scoring and results
Pass mark: 200 (scaled) on a 120–200 scale. Every candidate who passes is reported at the top of the scale, and the cut score comes from a panel standard-setting method (modified Angoff), so a pass tells you nothing about the margin. The scale does not compare with HRCI's 500 (scaled).
Results: a preliminary pass or fail at the test center, then the final result in your certification portal a few weeks later.
If you do not pass
The rule is short: next window, full fee. There is no second-chance retake option and no limit on attempts. Use the gap to work on the areas your score report flags; the practice test is sorted by the same six areas.
