SHRM recertification and HRCI credits, side by side

Every credential on this site renews every 3 years. To keep a SHRM credential you log 60 PDCs and pay $165–$210, depending on membership. To keep an HRCI credential you log 60 credits (45 credits for the aPHR), one of them in ethics, and pay $169. Both let you retest instead. The rules differ most in what happens when you are late.

The cycle, and what happens if you're late

SHRM: 3 years from the day you pass, ending on the last day of your birth month; then a 60-day grace period with a late fee, after which the credential is revoked. In that grace period the fee rises by $75 (recertification page); the full fee line is $165 for members, $210 for nonmembers; $240 / $285 late (during the grace period).

HRCI: Every 3 years, ending on the last day of your birth month; after that a 12-month suspended status (extra $100) before the credential expires. While suspended you "cannot use or represent yourself as certified", and after the 12 months the credential expires for good (recertification handbook, p. 13).

So the grace period is far shorter than the suspended status, and both charge for the delay. For either body, the safe date is the last day of your birth month in year three.

What counts as credit

SHRM: 60 professional development credits (PDCs) in 3 years, or retake the exam in the last 12 months of the cycle. An activity qualifies if it relates to the competencies or knowledge domains of the BASK, in three categories: Advance Your Education (no PDC maximum), Advance Your Organization (work projects, with a short write-up) and Advance Your Profession (qualifying activities). Membership in the society earns 3 PDCs a year, and its conferences and programs can be uploaded to your record automatically (recertification page).

HRCI: 60 HR credits in 3 years (1 of them ethics), or retake the exam. The senior and global credentials add quotas: the SPHR needs 60 (15 Business) and the GPHR 60 (15 Global). An activity must be HR-related and tied to the exam content outline of your credential; personal-development activities do not count (recertification handbook, p. 6).

Ethics. HRCI: 1 ethics credit required in every cycle since January 1, 2021, counted inside the total. SHRM: no ethics minimum; SHRM asks for 60 PDCs across its activity categories.

Recertifying by exam instead

Both bodies let you pass the exam again instead of logging credits, on different terms.

  • SHRM: you test at your current level no earlier than 12 months before your cycle ends, and contact the society before you apply. "If you fail the exam, your credential will be revoked", and you can no longer recertify with PDCs (recertification page).
  • HRCI: the exam must be taken before your cycle end date, otherwise the certification counts as new. If you don't pass, you can still recertify with credits until the end of the suspended period (recertification handbook, p. 6).

The HRCI route is the safer bet: a failed retest leaves the credit route open.

Holding more than one credential

Two HRCI credentials. A newly earned credential moves onto the cycle of your first one, so both end on the same date, with any specified credits prorated for the first cycle. One activity can count toward the specified credits of two designations, such as Global and Business hours, but only once toward the 60-credit total (recertification handbook, p. 8). Renewal is $169 for one HRCI credential, plus $50 for each additional one (up to $369 for five or more).

One HRCI and one SHRM credential. Neither body publishes a rule that converts the other's credits. The society's list of credentials that earn PDCs names only its own Specialty Credentials and two certificate programs of its foundation (qualifying activities), and HRCI's recertification handbook has no clause about SHRM. What you can do is narrower: an HR seminar or course may qualify under each body's own rules, and you report it to each, as two submissions on two cycles.

Myth: “SHRM accepts HRCI credits”

There is no equivalence table and no transfer between the two. A course counts for PDCs because it relates to the BASK, and for the other body's credits because it relates to your exam content outline, not because the other body approved it. Check each activity against each rule before you count on it twice.

What changed, and one open discrepancy

  • The PDC renewal fee went up. The 2023 recertification handbook listed $100 for members and $150 for nonmembers (2023 handbook, p. 11); the page checked on Oct 25, 2026 lists $165–$210, with a $75 late surcharge. Guides that quote the old fees are out of date.
  • Specialty Credential PDCs. A Specialty Credential earns PDCs, but two of the society's pages give different ranges per program, 13.5–26 (recertification) and 17–26 (qualifying activities); check the program itself before you count on a number.

Recertification, quick answers

How many PDCs do I need for SHRM recertification?

60 professional development credits (PDCs) in 3 years, or retake the exam in the last 12 months of the cycle. Ethics minimum: none set.

How much is SHRM recertification?

$165 for members and $210 for nonmembers as of Oct 2026, more in the grace period. The fee applies to recertification by PDCs.

How many credits does HRCI recertification need?

60 credits every 3 years for the PHR, 60 (15 Business) for the senior exam and 45 credits for the aPHR, each with one ethics credit inside the total.

Does SHRM accept HRCI credits?

Not as a rule. Neither body publishes a crossover. An activity can qualify with both if it meets each body's own requirements, but you report it to each separately.

What happens if I miss my SHRM recertification date?

You enter a grace period with a late fee; if you have not recertified by its end, the credential is revoked. An HRCI credential instead goes into suspended status for up to 12 months, with a surcharge.
