SPHR vs SHRM-SCP: two senior HR exams
Both are senior, strategic HR certifications, but they gate and test differently. The SPHR counts years of HR experience against your degree, 4–7 years of HR work; the SHRM-SCP asks for 3 years strategic HR whatever your education. The SPHR tests strategy as knowledge, the SHRM-SCP through situational judgment scenarios.

The short answer
SPHR
Take the SPHR if
- your career is long but not all of it strategic: the rule counts professional-level HR years;
- you want to test year-round, at a test center or, for select exams and locations, online;
- your role is US-based: questions follow the US laws and regulations in effect on your exam day;
- you prefer knowledge questions to judgment scenarios.
SHRM-SCP
Take the SHRM-SCP if
- you have 3 years of strategic work but no degree, where the SPHR would ask for 7 years;
- you hold the SHRM-CP and have moved into a strategic role;
- you handle senior-level scenarios well (question mix: Knowledge + SJI);
- you are a SHRM member: $399 at the standard price, open until Dec 24, 2026.

Who qualifies
SPHR: 4 years of professional-level HR experience with a master’s degree or higher, 5 years with a bachelor’s degree, or 7 years without a degree.
SHRM-SCP: At least 3 years of strategic-level HR work (1,000+ hours per calendar year), or 3 years as a SHRM-CP holder moving into a strategic role; no degree required.
The SHRM rule measures the kind of work, not the length of a career: a calendar year counts only if it held 1,000 hours of strategic work. The HRCI rule measures professional-level experience and lets a degree shorten it. So the SHRM-SCP is the easier gate for a strategic leader without a degree, and the SPHR for someone with a master's whose earlier years were operational. Details and audits: SPHR eligibility · SHRM-SCP eligibility.
How each tests strategy
The SPHR asks 140 (115 scored) questions in 2 h 30 min, knowledge-based, mostly multiple choice, including scenario items. Its outline puts Leadership and Strategy first, at 33%, followed by Talent Management at 23%.
The SHRM-SCP uses the same item mix as the SHRM-CP, 134 (110 scored) questions in 3 h 40 min; the handbook says the distribution of items by content and type "is the same for both" (2026 handbook, p. 17). What changes is the standard: the SCP is written to the BASK's advanced proficiency indicators for strategic work (SHRM-SCP study guide). The competencies themselves are explained on the BASK page.
In practice, SPHR study is learning what a strategy, a metric or a law requires. SHRM-SCP study is practicing which response a senior HR leader should choose first, and why the others fall short.
Reading the pass-rate gap
76% (2025) passed the SPHR and 50% (May–Jul 2025) the SHRM-SCP. HRCI counts a calendar year and SHRM one window, the scores sit on different scales, and different people choose each exam. Treat the gap as a hint, not a ranking. Window by window: SHRM-SCP pass rate.
Booking, price and renewal
- SPHR: Year-round, Pearson VUE test center, or online with OnVUE remote proctoring (for select exams and locations); $595 for everyone.
- SHRM-SCP: 2 windows a year, Prometric center only; $399–$499 by membership, at the standard price.
For a nonmember at the standard deadline the SHRM-SCP is $96 cheaper to sit; for a member, $196 before membership dues of $299 a year (our arithmetic on Oct 2026 prices). A fail changes the sums. SPHR: 90-day wait, pay again. SHRM-SCP: Next window, full fee.
Renewal takes 60 (15 Business) credits for the SPHR, an ethics credit among them, and 60 PDCs for the SHRM-SCP (ethics minimum: none set). Fees: $169 against $165–$210. Both sets of rules: HR recertification.
Coming from the PHR
A PHR holder looking at the SHRM-SCP is changing level and body at once. The PHR counts toward neither senior rule; what matters is whether you have 3 years of strategic work. If your years so far were operational, the next step on the same ladder is the SPHR once you reach 4–7 years of HR work (PHR vs SPHR). To stay at the professional level and switch bodies, see PHR vs SHRM-CP.
