SPHR requirements, degree by years
The SPHR asks for 4–7 years of HR work, depending on your degree, and no course, membership or earlier credential. The hard part is the word professional-level: HRCI defines it, audits applications at random, and charges $100 to move you to another exam if you applied for the wrong one.

Years of HR work by degree
- Master’s degree or higher: 4 years of professional-level HR work.
- Bachelor’s degree: 5 years.
- No degree: 7 years.
The degree can be in any field; its level is the only thing that changes the years. The years don’t have to be recent or back to back.

What counts as professional-level HR work
HRCI’s definition has five parts. The role should involve:
- independent judgment and discretion in your work;
- specialized HR knowledge with some authority to make decisions;
- in-depth work such as gathering, analyzing and interpreting data;
- dealing with a broad range of people, including key personnel;
- personal accountability for results.
The same page names who is not likely to qualify: people managers whose main job is in a function other than HR, entry-level HR clerks and assistants, and people who want to move into HR. A department head who approves hires and handles some HR tasks is the kind of manager the page means: HR is not the main job.
The title isn’t the test
Eligibility is about what the job involved, not what it was called. An “HR coordinator” who owned investigations and policy decisions may qualify; an “HR manager” whose work was mostly data entry may not. If you are audited, the job description is what gets read.
Audits
A random share of applications is audited, a requirement of the institute’s NCCA accreditation. If yours is picked, you send everything at once: a job description on company letterhead for each job on the application, a copy of your degree or transcript where one applies, and a signed audit form (FAQ). The review takes longer than a normal approval (see the table), and an application that fails it becomes ineligible. Write each job’s duties on the application the way its job description reads.
Applied for the senior exam but fit the PHR?
You can switch exams before you book an appointment, not after: $100 plus any price difference, and the original fees are not refunded. The PHR asks for 1–4 years of HR work. The handbook does not say whether moving to a cheaper exam returns the difference, so ask HRCI before you switch. The PHR route: PHR requirements.
Against the SHRM-SCP
SHRM’s senior exam doesn’t look at degrees. It asks for 3 years of strategic-level HR work, whatever your education. So the gap between the two senior exams is largest without a degree (7 years here) and smallest with a master’s (4 years). More on the senior pair: SPHR vs SHRM-SCP.

SPHR requirements, quick answers
Can I take the SPHR without a degree?
Yes, with 7 years of professional-level HR experience.
Does my degree have to be in HR?
No. A degree in any field counts; only the level of the degree changes the years you need.
Do I need the PHR before the SPHR?
No. There is no credential prerequisite, only experience and education. The PHR asks for less experience: 1–4 years of HR work.
Is there a senior HRCI exam without US law?
Yes, the SPHRi. It uses the same five functional areas, applied to local practice instead of US law, and asks for 4–7 years of HR work.
